Rowton Castle, Halfway House

Rowton Castle, near Shrewsbury, was the only English venue of its kind to feature on the list compiled by TripAdvisor – a website that gives people a chance to provide their honest verdict on hotels and restaurants.

It now joins an elite group from Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic. Bryan Cherrington, Rowton Castle's co-owner, said the ranking was "well deserved".

He said: "Castles and stately homes define England. This award shows they can make superb venues. I feel this award is extremely well deserved as the team here work very hard. Many of them have been here between 10 to 15 years."

TripAdvisor reviewers praised the castle's "sympathetic restoration", as well as its "outstanding gardens and grounds", and the "discreet and attentive staff".

One visitor who posted on the site said: "A marvellous hotel contained within a beautifully restored 'small' castle with plenty of character". One of the UK's top wedding venues, the present Rowton Castle was built in the 17th century on a site occupied for hundreds of years.
