Image of man released after Shropshire teenager sexually assaulted on train

Police have released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to after a teenage girl from Shropshire was sexually assaulted on a train

Published

The 17-year-old girl was on the 7.05pm London Midland train from Birmingham when a man sat next to her and touched her leg on July 22. The teenager, from Ellesmere, moved away from him but he again sat next to her before getting off the train with her at Shrewsbury.

The man then followed the girl along the platform until she got into her father's car outside the station.

PC Stuart Williamson from BTP said: "This was reported to us via our Report it to Stop it text number – 61016 – once the girl arrived home and the incident was still fresh in her mind.

"While clearly it would have been better had this offence not happened, it is reassuring to see our text number being used for exactly what it was set up to do: reporting unwanted sexual behaviour, and that it gave the teen the confidence to contact us.

"We've carried out a number of CCTV inquiries on the train and at the station, which have revealed a man on the platform who we'd like to talk to about this assault and I'd urge anyone who knows his identity to call us."

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting reference B4/WSUB of 1/9/2015.

Alternatively, people can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or at crimestoppers-uk.org
