Motorcyclist seriously injured in M54 crash near Telford

A motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the M54 near Telford.

The man was knocked off his bike by a car near junction seven at 5.20pm yesterday. Ambulance crews on the scene were joined by a trauma doctor and critical care paramedic, who were dropped off by helicopter.

The team worked on the man at the roadside and he was taken to Princess Royal Hospital by ambulance before being transferred to the major trauma centre at Royal Stoke University Hospital by the Midland Air Ambulance.

The collision happened on the eastbound carriageway near Cluddley and closed motorway from junction six to seven.

An ambulance, responder paramedic, paramedic area support officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with a trauma doctor and critical care paramedic on board were sent to the crash.

Claire Brown, spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "When the emergency services arrived they found a motorcyclist, a man, who had been knocked off his bike following a collision with a car.

"The man was unconscious and had sustained multiple injuries including a head injury.

"The team of medics worked together to provide trauma care to the man on the M54.

"Due to his critical condition, the doctor sedated the motorcyclist to help manage his airway.

"The man was fully immobilised before being transferred by land ambulance on blue lights to Princess Royal Hospital to meet up with the helicopter.

"The air crew, who had travelled in the land ambulance to continue treatment, transferred the man to the aircraft before he was flown to Royal Stoke University Hospital, a major trauma centre, for further emergency care."
