The ambulance was attacked in Castle Gates at 3.30am as the crew arrived to treat an assault victim.

Two people approached the ambulance and one person punched through a side window.

The crew were still in the vehicle and fled the scene unhurt. They called West Mercia Police who are now dealing with the incident.

Adrian Ball, West Midlands Ambulance Service area manager, said: "This is an incredibly disappointing case which means we have an ambulance off the road and unable to respond to 999 calls whilst it's being repaired.

"Thankfully my staff weren't hurt but they were understandably upset by the incident.

"The case was immediately reported to West Mercia Police, which is now commencing an investigation.

"Ambulance staff are here to help people in an emergency. Attacking our staff and vehicles is an abhorrent crime, which we take an incredibly dim view of."

Emily Cleland, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said police were called to Castle Gates at 3.30am following reports of a disturbance.

She said: "On arrival a number of local people were present and police found two males with injuries that were not life threatening.

"An ambulance was called to treat their injuries and a window of the ambulance was broken.

"Police are investigating that damage as well as the initial incident.

"No arrests have been made at this stage and the investigation continues."

Witnesses are asked to call police on 101 quoting incident reference 128 of September 6.
