Residents who erected a fake speed camera to deter speeding motorists have been criticised by a safety body.

Shropshire's Safer Roads Partnership (SRP) said villagers in Knockin, near Oswestry, should have gone through the proper channels.

And officials warned they do not condone fake speed cameras.

A cardboard box, painted yellow, has gone up in the village, where residents say they have been complaining for years about the speed of vehicles along the main road. It is the latest homemade device put up in villages across Shropshire over the years.

But the SRP, an organisation of nine agencies working to prevent death and injury on the roads is urging communities to go through the proper procedures to ensure traffic calming or speed restrictions are brought in.

SRP spokeswoman Anna Higgins said: "The partnership does not endorse fake speed cameras and would encourage all of our communities to raise their concerns about speeding through the correct channels.

"They should talk to their local parish council or safer neighbourhood team, who will then bring the issue to our attention.

"All of our speed enforcement sites are carefully assessed against strict national Department for Transport criteria around suitability, traffic management and health and safety before being implemented."
