West Mercia Police say the 3pm fixture is expected to see upwards of 9,000 football fans travel to the New Meadow stadium in Shrewsbury and that high visibility patrols and extra police officers will be in place in the town and around the stadium throughout the day.

Chief Inspector Adrian Knight will be leading the operation.

He said: "Shrewsbury's first game of the season is expected to be a great day out for all of the family and, as always, our officers will be on hand to assist with any issues should they arise.

"We are not expecting any significant disruption to the local community but we will be in a position to deal with any incidents should they occur. We will have a proportionate policing operation in place to deal with the significant number of fans who will be travelling to the New Meadow stadium for the game.

"Our main priority is to maintain the safety of the public and to ensure all those travelling to and from the game do so as safely and as timely as possible."
