Officers were called at 3.40am today to reports of an assault on a woman in the area of Wrockwardine Wood Way.

As a result Wrockwardine Wood Way has been closed between New Road and Wombridge Road while investigations take place.

Residents spoke of their shock as the road remained blocked after several hours.

Alexandra Smith said: "It looks really serious, they are not even allowing walkers over the bridge."

Tina Wallace Sale said: "I just came that way and both lanes are taped off and so is the bridge."

Tracey Louisa Riley said: "Police just opened one lane but we still can't walk near that bridge. I'm stuck to which way to walk back."

Witnesses or anyone with information are urged to call police on 101.
