A new primary school is beginning to take shape as it prepares to welcome pupils next year.

It may look like a maze of metal at the moment, but in about five months times Lawley Primary Academy School will cater for more than 400 pupils.

Before the pupils can move into the £4.5 million school next January they will take up residence in the Lawley Development Visitor Centre from September. Around 30 reception pupils will use the visitor centre as their classroom until the work is completed.

The school, which is being built by Shepherd Construction, is said to be progressing well according to Telford & Wrekin Council. The building has been designed to be a modern learning environment and will be tailored to the needs and interests of the children.

Councillor Paul Watling, Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: "It is a huge honour to be a part of shaping a new school for the children of Lawley Village. Being able to be part of the creation of the school from the start is a unique and special experience, and has ensured that every decision has been made with the children's interests at heart.

"We are very much looking forward to working with the parents and community to offer the very best in educational practise and facilities."

About 3,400 homes will be built in the village over the next few years and councillors have been told there are not enough school places to meet the expected demand. The school will have scope for expansion to cater for up to 400 pupils. It is one of a number funded by the multi-million Building Schools for the Future programme.
