Jorge Real Sierra, who was convicted of killing Linda and Anthony O'Malley 13 years ago, was captured at Madrid's Barajas airport following a covert operation by Spain's national police force.

In 2006 Sierra, and his brother-in-law Antonio Velazquez Gonzalez, were jailed for the kidnap, torture and killing of the O'Malleys, who had been house hunting in Costa Blanca. Sierra was jailed for 62 years and Gonzales, now aged 50, was sentenced to 54 years and both were expected to serve at least 25 years.

Linda, 56, a manageress at an Ellesmere Port store, and Anthony, 42, a car restorer, had travelled to Spain in September 2002, and were last seen in the Benidorm area.

The unsuspecting Llangollen couple's search for a retirement home in the sun turned into a nightmare when they were fatally lured to view a villa in the town of Alcoy, north of Alicante.

The O'Malleys were held, bound and gagged, for almost three weeks in the basement of the property, while the two Venezuelan kidnappers systematically emptied the couple's bank account of their £20,000 life savings.

Officers discovered that 65-year-old Sierra had obtained a passport and had one of his daughters under surveillance when she flew from Malaga to Madrid and she led them straight to the fugitive.

Sierra was arrested near the airport and was found to be in possession of a number of false documents. His daughter is also reported to have been arrested and faces charges of aiding and abetting an escaped prisoner and for making false statements.
