Road marking blunder leaves Shrewsbury drivers confused

Motorists using a newly-revamped roundabout on the outskirts of Shrewsbury have been left a little confused thanks to its road signs.

For the signage written on the busy A5 is signposting them to a short road in the Liverpool area instead of to Shrewsbury town centre.

Work costing millions of pounds to Emstrey Island was finished in February.

A total of £3.8 million has been spent on the roundabout, just three years after £500,000 was spent on a revamp that saw traffic lights installed.

Sign writers have written A5054 on the road surface instead of A5064 – The A5054 is a short urban A-road to the north of Liverpool.

During the work, that took place though much of 2014, construction workers realigned both A5 approaches to the island, as well as creating dedicated turning lanes and two dedicated lanes through the roundabout for traffic on the A5 in a bid to reduce congestion.

Roads feeding in to it include the A5 from Telford and Oswestry, the B4380 from Atcham and the A5064 from Shrewsbury town centre along London Road.

But sign writers have made an error and have written the A5054 on the road surface – which is a short urban A-road to the north of Liverpool.

Motorist Karen Pearce from Shrewsbury said: "All the money spent on the two islands Preston and Emstrey and the roads, not mentioning the delays and continuing closures, it has amused and infuriated me at same time that the sign writing on road is incorrect.

"Coming from Preston to Emstrey Island and going into right lane for London Road the A5064, on the road is written incorrectly A5054."

And James Williams, 42, a carpenter from Belle Vue, Shrewsbury added: "You would think that they would get the signage on the road right. It wouldn't have taken much for the workmen to check it."

A spokeswoman for Highways England said: "We will be looking in to the matter and putting it right. We are all human and mistakes can be made. We hope that the people of Shrewsbury are still enjoying the benefits of the new roundabout."
