Global support for Newport building painted purple

It has divided a town – and has now caused a global debate and sparked a petition signed by more than 1,000.

Since turning purple, Boughey House has caused quite a stir among the people of Newport. The owners have been told they may have to repaint it, but a campaign to keep it as it is has gained support from across the world.

The petition was set up by the owners Julia and Gary Price.

It cost Mrs Price more than £1,200 to repaint the Grade II-listed building from its original cream earlier this month.

But after Telford & Wrekin Council received two complaints the owners were told they may have to get rid of the purple.

Mrs Price, as well as the people who work in the building, decided to set up the petition, with people from America and Australia backing the campaign.

"I just think the purple building has become close to everyone's hearts in the town and beyond," she said.

"I'm just so humbled by the amount of support we have received and it has on occasions made me cry.

"I expected us to get some support but not on this scale, and I think it has just overwhelmed everyone involved.

"We are asking people to take selfies in front of the building and share them on social media, just to help spread the word out.

"I don't know what the outcome will be but as we have so many signatures I assume the council will have to look into it."

The couple took over Boughey House, which dates back to the 1400s, back in 2001.

Patrick Beech, chairman of Newport Chamber of Commerce, said: "There are a lot of premises in Newport that need redecorating.

"Gary Price did the painting and I think he did a really good job. I personally think the building looks really nice, and I haven't got anything against it.

"However, I do think as it is a listed building they should have applied for planning permission, and I doubt people would have objected judging by the response."
