It might have rained on their parade – but thousands of visitors to Shrewsbury carnival made sure it did not dampen their spirits.

The carnival featured more than 25 floats in a holiday-themed procession, which was led by town crier Martin Wood.

Carnival queen Zoe Forrester stole the show – the 17-year-old toured in the procession in an open-topped Jaguar.

The event attracted thousands to the town on Saturday with crowds lining the street to see the parade leave the Quarry and travel through to the town centre.

Chris Pritchard, a spokesman for the carnival committee said: "It was a really great day. As far as the weather goes, and the fact that it was raining, we were very pleased with it all.

"I would say we had as many as 4,000 or 5,000 people there."

The event kicked off in the Quarry with stage acts including Towyn Silver Band, Shrewsbury Town Football Club Cheerleaders, Topaz Dance School and Polish Folk Dancers.

Mr Pritchard said: "It is the first time we have had a professional stage which was sponsored by Wrekin Housing Trust and the Armoury, and because of that money it meant we could have more acts on than ever before.

"The parade was fantastic of course, but the stage was a real highlight. We achieved something new this year."

Visitors also enjoyed a fun fair and host of trade and charity stalls.

Mr Pritchard said: "All the money is given back to local charities in the Shrewsbury area. Last year we raised about £5,000 and we hope we have done just as well this year."
