An army of runners all with their own story or inspired by a friend or family member donned running gear to help fight the battle against cancer.

Women from across the county dressed in pink and laced up their running shoes at the Quarry in Shrewsbury to run the Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The event was held at the Quarry for the first time since moving from the West Mids Showground and 1,300 people of all ages took part. Organisers today said they expected to raise about £105,000.

Lucy Morton, area marketing manager for Cancer Research UK, said organisers were delighted with the turnout and the weather.

She said: "It has been a really good event and everyone has created a really fantastic atmosphere, the sun has shone for us and we are really pleased with the turnout. It has been really lovely.

"People have come dressed up in fancy dress, we have had dogs in tutus and everyone has really gone with our pink army theme – I have seen a lot of face paints and pink camouflage and flags.

"This is the first time we have been to the Quarry so it was exciting for us and anywhere you stand around the Quarry you can see different parts of the course."

One team running the Race for Life was Sally's Stars from Montgomery. The 10 women, all related, were running in memory of Sally Williams-Manuel, who died four years ago, aged 32, from breast cancer.

Her mother Christine Williams said: "The reason we take part today is my daughter Sally Williams-Manuel passed away four years ago with breast cancer and we promised her we would do it every year.

"We are in yellow because she loved yellow and sunflowers and the team name is Sally's Stars. We did well, we got in within the hour. I have done this five years now in a row and the first year Sally did it with us.

Sara Perry, from Church Stretton, ran with her seven-year-old daughter Beth. Mrs Perry's father was diagnosed with bowel cancer in January and has been given the all clear, while Beth's teacher died from leukaemia last year.

Mrs Perry, 39, said: "We really enjoyed taking part, we completed the race in 31 minutes and Beth ran all the way round. She's run 5k and is very tired now but she can still do her cartwheels.

Mother and daughter team, Mandi Gilbert and Emily Duffield, from Telford and Brierley Hill respectively, ran in 41 minutes, both sporting tutus.

Mrs Duffield said: "We both really enjoyed it. We decided to dress as fairies, it just makes it that bit more fun and you want to make a bit of an effort."
