Tom Garvey, in his 50s, collapsed during the Newport Pool League match between Newport Legion and Navigation Gnosall on Wednesday.

Paramedics were called to the Newport Royal British Legion club in Audley Road at about 9pm.

They, along with team-mate Andy Crossley, resuscitated Mr Garvey who was then taken to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton. It is believed he suffered a cardiac arrest.

Mr Garvey collapsed shortly after winning his singles frame. The match was then abandoned.

Neil Perkins, spokesman for the league, said: "Everyone involved in the league sends their best wishes to Tom and his family at this distressing time."
