Police appeal over attacked cygnets in Shrewsbury

Police in Shrewsbury are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward, after a swan's nest and its two cygnets was tampered with in the Battlefield Way area of Shrewsbury.

A swan's nest along with two cygnets appears to have been tampered with by a group of youths; consequently this has led to one of the cygnets being injured last week.

A member of the public had come across the next and discovered the injured cygnet, which sadly later died after being treated by a local vet.

West Mercia Police are leading in a joint investigation with the RSPCA to clarify what lead to the death of the cygnet.

Police are eager to locate and speak to a couple who may have walked past the nest and made contact with the youths at the time.

PC Andrew Hawkins of West Mercia Police said: "This incident has caused a lot of anger and upset within the community, and we would like to reassure the public that we are committed to finding out what exactly took place, and to bring those responsible to justice.

"We are keen to trace and speak to a couple who may have been in the area at the time and approached a group of youths prior to the incident. It is hoped that they may have vital information that can assist with the investigation."
