The rider, a man in his 20s, was thrown some distance from his bike after the crash on the A49 at the junction for Grinshill at about 5.45pm on Monday.

Motorists at the scene were attempting to resuscitate him when emergency services arrived at the scene.

His condition remained critical overnight on Monday, and ambulance staff praised those who stopped to help.

However, despite their efforts the motorcyclist sustained serious head injuries and was transported by air ambulance to North Staffordshire Hospital but died later the same evening.

The crash involved three vehicles, a motorcycle, a green Toyota and a white Citroen.

The motorcyclist was travelling in the direction of Whitchurch while the two cars were travelling in the direction of Shrewsbury.

Police were today urging anyone with information to get in touch if they witnessed the crash.

Murray MacGregor, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "On arrival, the crews found a man, who was estimated to be in his 20s, who had suffered very significant injuries; CPR was being carried out at the scene by other motorists.

"On arrival, his condition was said to be critical, but the quick actions of other motorists have given him the best possible chance of survival."
