Jamie Sterry, 23, from Telford, suffered his injury 17 miles into the race and despite trying to continue, he was forced to give up.

But his hard work paid off and he still managed to raise £2,227.50 for good causes.

He is supporting Age UK Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin's Gift of Friendship Appeal to lonely elderly people.

Mr Sterry had trained for nine months before the marathon, running 50 miles a week.

He said he was making good progress in the marathon when he felt a sudden pain in his leg.

He was checked over by St John Ambulance staff at the 16 mile point and was advised to stop.

But determined to complete the race, he carried on walking for another mile before being forced to stop by medical staff who wanted to prevent long term damage to his tendon.

Jamie said: "Having trained for months and done the bulk of the marathon, I was disappointed with myself when the medics said I couldn't continue, but I'm pleased at how supportive people have been.

"It's such a good cause and I know the money will make a difference.

"Thank you to everyone who sponsored me."

He added: "I have been going to my GP since as my leg hasn't completely healed and it is still uncomfortable and painful at times.

"I don't think I will be participating in another marathon again."

The Gift of Friendship Appeal is raising money and recruiting volunteers to increase services such as befriending and social activities that reduce isolation and loneliness among older people in Shropshire.

Dozens of runners from across Shropshire took part in the London Marathon, many raising thousands of pounds for various charities both within the county and further afield
