Town secured promotion to League One with last weekend's 1-0 win away at Cheltenham and this Saturday Mickey Mellon's team take on Plymouth at the Greenhous Meadow in a fixture that could see them crowned League Two winners – provided title challengers Burton lose their match away at Cambridge.

Shrewsbury's mayor, Beverley Baker, already has her ticket for Saturday's game as Shrewsbury Town get set to celebrate promotion to League One.

A 1-0 victory over Cheltenham on Saturday cemented Town's automatic promotion spot, and a win at home to Plymouth this Saturday could even see them crowned League Two champions, if rivals Burton trip up at Cambridge.

Councillor Baker said that she is looking forward to a packed sell-out crowd cheering Micky Mellon's side on to finish the season in style.

She said: "It is going to be great fun and it's a great chance to celebrate the season. Everywhere you go people are putting things in their windows, they are talking about it, it is just wonderful the way it has boosted everyone and given people a real feel-good factor.

"It is doing the town so much good. I went and bought my tickets and it is almost sold out already."

She said she is confident the team will fulfil their part of the equation to ensure the League Two trophy comes back to Greenhous Meadow.

She said: "I think we have got a really good chance. They are playing so well and they have got so much confidence. They won't get complacent, not in the position they are in – they are playing like they are going to win. They are not like other teams who get complacent, they are really playing for the fans."

She also backed the team to continue their good form come the start of next season.

She said: "It is fantastic, we are on a roll and I think we are well placed to move up.

"People say that it is going to be tough but I think we are will be fine and we are on a good trajectory.

Roger Groves, chairman of the Shrews Trust, today said he expects the fans to provide deafening support in the quest to finish the season with silverware for the trophy cabinet.

He said: "I think it will be a great party atmosphere. If the weather is good there will be loads of shirts out, it's that time of year and it will be a fantastic celebration.

"There is a fear that the game can become secondary to the day but we want to finish as champions so let's pack the ground and cheer them on."

Mr Groves said a number of fans would be treating the game as an "away day" and heading into town early to celebrate ahead of the 3pm kick-off.

Simon Moore, chairman of the Shrewsbury Town official supporters club, said he hoped that with promotion now secured fans can now relax and enjoy the game.

He said: "If it is a day like today it would be great with all the colours.

"The fancy dress away at Cheltenham on Saturday was fantastic although I think a few people must have got pretty hot in those costumes.

"It is going to be nice on Saturday with the pressure off. I know if Burton lose we could still win the championship but we have done what we want to do.

"We can enjoy the day knowing that we do not have to win. People can come down, enjoy the day, fill the ground, and watch a decent game of football."

Mr Groves said that despite the celebratory atmosphere he is confident the players will not allow complacency to creep in ahead of the game.

He said: "I am sure this week it is difficult with lots of celebrations going on, you can get distractions there but most of the time these guys will come in and play with a more relaxed feel and hopefully get a really good result.

"With a full house there they will want to put it on and get a result to finish the season off in style.

"I fully expect us to end the season on a high and we will go up as champions."
