Shropshire border mother's cancer fund hits £100k

A campaign launched to support a woman battling gall bladder cancer has reached the £100,000 mark.

The target was set in June last year by two loving daughters, Teri and Hannah Cliffe, as they were determined to help their mum, Berni, 52, from Audlem, who has been diagnosed with stage four cancer of the gall bladder.

NHS treatment for her cancer at this late stage was not available for her so the girls, from Audlem near Market Drayton, set about raising the much-needed funds.

Since then the Mend Our Mum campaign has grown and many fundraising events have been held.

And after people from the village came together to produce a charity record and music video, the story was seen across the country on national television news.

People around Audlem featured on the rendition of Amazing Grace, which was shown on ITV news, Good Morning Britain and Granada Reports, as well as regional and national BBC news broadcasts.

Now the total amount raised by Mend Our Mum has reached the £100,000 mark.

Berni said: "I am overwhelmed and just want to say a big thank you to everyone that has donated.

"This shows that there are far more nice people in this world than nasty ones. Without the help of the community we would have never reached the total. We are blessed."

The Cliffe family were devastated by the news in June last year that Berni

could only expect to live about nine to 12 months if she has chemotherapy – and without treatment she was given just three months by doctors.

However Berni said the chemotherapy had shrunk the tumour and now there may be a chance to operate and remove her gall bladder.

She said: "I have such a rare type of cancer this cannot be done on the NHS and will cost in the region of £30,000 - £40,000 so a large chunk of the money will hopefully be spent on that."
