Four theatres and a new dedicated bone cancer centre will be built to serve patients from across the county and beyond at Oswestry Orthopaedic Hospital.

Hospital bosses donned hard hats yesterday for a ground-breaking ceremony where a huge digger replaced the traditional spade to get work started.

Officials at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, have been working with contractors Kier for the past nine months to develop the designs, which have been planned following consultation with staff and patients.

The bone cancer centre, which has been paid for thanks to a £2 million public funding appeal and will be one of five in the country, will include inpatient and clinic facilities and a multi-use ward.

Wendy Farrington Chadd, chief executive of the hospital, said the new theatre complex would be a "tremendous development" for patients.
