Plea to Vince Cable to get Shrewsbury removed from Wem addresses

Councillors in Wem will write to Business Secretary Vince Cable in a final bid to remove Shrewsbury from the town's postal address.

Members of Wem Town Council decided at a meeting last night to write to Mr Cable over the issue.

The inclusion of the county town, 10 miles from Wem, has led to lost post and both delivery drivers and emergency services staff being misdirected.

Councillor Pauline Dee said: "It isn't just being prudent. It causes problems for businesses."

Mayor of Wem Councillor Mandy Meakin said: "What I can't understand is why Market Drayton has a Telford postcode but does not have Telford in its address, yet we have Shrewsbury."

The council has previously written to Royal Mail but the firm has said it is unable to make changes unless there is an "operational need" and that Shrewsbury is "the correct postal town for Wem".

The problem has been ongoing for several years.
