Burglars struck at a Ludlow town centre supermarket today, wrenching open the doors and making off with a haul of cigarettes.

Shoppers and staff arrived at the Co-operative store at the junction of Upper Galdeford, Lower Galdeford and Tower Street to find its automatic doors prised open and police on the scene after the raid in the early hours.

The supermarket had been raided by the thieves during the night, who made off in a car at about 4am. They are believed to have taken a stash of cigarettes from the counter next to the main exit of the shop.

The doors were cordoned off with shopping trolleys and police tape while forensics officers looked over the store.

However, it was open to customers as usual, using the undamaged main entrance next to the blocked exit.
