Watch: Final training day for new Shropshire firefighters

It may look like the fire service was being kept busy dealing with emergency after emergency.  But in reality this was the final day of training for some of its latest recruits.

The On The Run Day, put Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service's new recruits through real life situations, such as house fires and car accidents, which they could face during any 999 call.

By putting them through the scenarios, the new recruits were able to see what it will be like when they go out to an emergency.

Shaun Baker, station manger at Telford Central said he came up with the idea five years ago when he was a training instructor.

He said: "By doing this we are teaching people about the equipment as well as giving them some experience and a chance to deal with real life situations.

"They are able to understand what's going on and they can ask any last minute questions they might have, as when they are in the truck they might be embarrassed to do so.

"By running this training day it makes it safer for them as well as the public. The day went really well and I think everyone enjoyed themselves."

During the training day, the recruits were put through a selection of incidents including a staged house fire in a residential street, a car fire and a car accident.

The recruits had to put their new skills to the test by using what they had been taught to put the fires out safely or to rescue a dummy trapped under a car.

Michelle Townsend, 43, from Church Stretton, is one of the new firefighters to become a retained firefighter.

This means she is "on call" a minimum of 84 hours a week and lives within five minutes of a fire station.

"I've wanted to do this for quite some time but due to commitments I haven't had the chance until now," she said.

"It's been brilliant, and I have loved every minute.

"Even though I am a fitness instructor I still found the training physically challenging, but one thing I did notice is that even though I am a woman I haven't been held back.

"Once the uniform is on you can't tell if you're male or female so you're never told that you can't do something, you are expected to do everything."

As well as being a fitness instructor and firefighter, Ms Townsend also has two sons, who she said are very proud of her.

During one of the training exercises the fire service staged a house fire in a residential area in Madeley.

Crews were told that a family were trapped in the house so they acted quickly to get them out.

Meanwhile, the service will hold a Women's Taster Day on February 21, at Oswestry Fire Station, from 9.30am until midday.
