Five-year-old Jack Dirkin, who attends Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge Primary School, has qualified for the world under-six championships in Pinehurst, North Carolina, in July but

needs to raise £5,000 to get there and play in other tournaments.

Jack's fundraising golf day will take place on May 10, at Horsehay Village Golf Centre, Telford, starting at 10am.

His father Chris said: "We are having a lot of people taking an interest in him but we have not yet got any additional sponsorship He is going to be on national TV next week so there is a lot more profile around him at the moment.

Jack Dirkin, who has become the youngest player to compete in the US Kids Golf European Junior Championships at age 4 is seen here at Horsehay Village Golf Club.

"We have got the golf day in May. We think there is going to be about 40 to 50 people who will come and play which is good and we are likely to have another event at Church Stretton Golf Club in April.

"Wrekin Housing Trust has provided us with £500 and family and friends have given some money so we are at about 10 per cent of the total we need for the year."

Jack practises on course for an hour during the week depending on the weather and for about two hours at weekends with his coach Matthew Lea, of Horsehay Village Golf Centre.

Jack has recently gained full support from Elton Gidney, a sports branding and management company based in Shropshire, which is also designing a new website for him.

Jack first came to prominence when he competed last May in the United States Kids Golf Junior Championship at the Longniddry Golf Club in Scotland. He was the tournament's youngest competitor at the age of four and finished 47th out of 51 in the under-seven category.

The golf day is open to teams of three at £25 per player.
