Powys County Council has backed plans for an on-street loading and parking review in Welshpool, which will see sections of the town transformed into a no-stopping area.

Areas of Severn Street, Church Street, The Cross, Berriew Street and Broad Street are earmarked to become either no-stopping areas or to have no loading between 8am and 10am and 3pm and 5.30pm.

Henfaes Lane, Welshpool Industrial Estate, Salop Road, Erw Wen – the road leading to Welshpool High School – Severn Road, Mill Lane, New Street, Brook Street, Westwood Park, Cobden Street, Gungrog Road, Oldford Close, Woodside, and Bryneglwys would also become no parking areas.

Plans to place unlocking bollards at the bottom of Boot Street are also under consideration.

The council will look at bringing in no-waiting and no-loading at any time restrictions to Severn Street, Church Street, The Cross and Broad Street. There will also be a change in parking restrictions limiting drivers to a one hour limit in High Street, Broad Street, Jehu Road and Brook Street.

Chris Lloyd, road safety and traffic systems manager for Powys County Council, said: "The review consisted of establishing what changes were needed to the existing restrictions within Welshpool to address certain omissions, to properly manage traffic flows within the town, to eliminate inconsistencies and identify any restrictions that no longer served any useful purpose which could be removed.

"At the request of Welshpool Town Council, the proposals include the pedestrianisation of part of Hall Street."
