Mr Williams's grandson, Martyn Haynes, paid tribute to his grandfather saying he was a very well respected and patient man.

"My grandfather was a police officer for 25 years, worked all over the county, including St Georges, Oakengates and Whitchurch," he said. "He loved his job and as long as knew him he would always tell me how much he enjoyed it.

"He was long retired before me and my brother Stephen were born, but he always told us how much he loved it.

"I have so many memories of him. We had a caravan that we used in Aberystwyth for as long as I can remember, we spent a lot of time there, and it really did become like a second home.

"We always loved hearing stories about him being a police officer including his involvement at the siege at Weston-under-Redcastle, to stories about having a full teapot emptied over his head when trying to move on travellers.

"He also told us about having to escort a prisoner back from Scotland where the local Glasgow police officers got him very drunk on whisky.

"He became a driving instructor after he left the police and once again he must have had to show a lot of patience. It is weird how many people must have known him because of his driving.

"He was a very respected man in the community."

Mr Williams joined the police in 1952 and worked there until he retired in 1977. Once he retied he set up School of Motoring and was well respected driving instructor for around a decade before ailing health forced him to retire.

Mr Williams married Marion, who was from Wellington, in June 1953, and then Karen Haynes, his only daughter, was born in 1957. Sadly Marion passed away in 2003.

Mrs Haynes, 58, from Wellington, said: "My father was the most amazing person and he'll be missed deeply, everyone thinks that they have had the best dad - but I know I did."

He has two grandson's Martyn 33 and Steven 35.

The funeral for Mr Williams took place on Friday at Telford Crematorium. The family have asked for donations to be made to The British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK. Family flowers only.
