The A49 was shut between Shrewsbury and Craven Arms last night after a police officer noticed smell of gas around the B4370 junction to All Stretton, near Church Stretton.

Inspector James Ashton, speaking for West Mercia Police, said the smell was first noticed at about 9.45pm.

He said: "We called in the National Grid and the Highways Agency put a road closure on."

The leak was located and dealt with, and the road re-opened, at about 5.30am today.
