The man in his 40s was found next to a rock face by a waterfall at Carding Mill Valley, near Church Stretton, and had to be carried through a stream on a stretcher.

Ambulance crews had attended the scene at about 1.15pm yesterday and treated the man at the scene, but firefighters were called in to help take the walker to safety as temperatures fell and the light started to fade.

Chris Kowalik, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said conditions in the area had been "extremely icy" and that the walker could only be reached by foot.

He added the walker, whose ankle was placed in a vacuum splint at the scene, was carried to a waiting National Trust off-road vehicle before being transferred to an ambulance and taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further treatment.
