Parish council in fight to save Shropshire pub

A parish council has lodged a bid to keep one of its village pubs as a community asset.

The Top House Lodge in Weston Rhyn has been closed for about six months and there are worries that it could be converted and lose its status as a pub.

The Campaign for Real Ale originally put in a nomination but that has since been withdrawn.

Last month Weston Rhyn Parish Council lodged its interest and councillors, who meet tonight in the public institute, will be asked to decide if the want to go ahead with a formal bid.

This would mean the community would have the right to make the first bid to buy the building.

In the original nomination Roger Dyke, clerk to the council, said the Top House Lodge was the only community pub in the centre of the village, the nearest alternative being a kilometre away. It had enjoyed good support from darts, pool, dominoes and football teams.

"The parish is growing in size every year and it is considered detrimental to the community to lose yet another village amenity," he added.
