A man in his 50s and a woman in her 40s had to be freed by firefighters from their vehicles following the crash on the B4176 near Worfield.

It happened shortly before 7.30am and caused the road to be closed for a short time.

The pair were sent to the Royal Stoke University Hospital by land ambulance where they were treated for head, chest and pelvic injuries.

Police say the crash involved a Vauxhall Corsa and a Ford Fusion, and believe the vehicles were travelling in the opposite direction when they collided with each other.

Inspector Ben Smith, from West Mercia Police, said: "We were called at 7.23am to a road traffic collision on the B4176 involving two vehicles. It looks like they were travelling in the opposite direction.

"The occupants, a male driver in his 50s and a female driver of the other car in her 40s, were trapped initially but were extricated by the fire service."

Two ambulances and the Midlands Air Ambulance medical team travelling in a rapid response car from Cosford were sent to the scene.

Steve Parry, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: "Crews responded to a road traffic collision involving two cars.

"A man in his 50s was treated for a head injury and chest pain. He was given pain relief and immobilised with the use of a neck collar and spinal board before being conveyed to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

"The woman driver of the second car involved was believed to be in her 40s. She was trapped for nearly 40 minutes and treated for chest and pelvic injuries.

"The patient was given pain relief and immobilised before being transferred to the Royal Stoke University Hospital for further assessment and treatment."

Firefighters from Albrighton, Tweedale and Wellington were called to the scene and helped free the drivers from their vehicles using specialist cutting equipment.
