The black and white print, titled The Football Match, sold for £1,250 to a Nottinghamshire buyer at an auction held by Halls at its Battlefield saleroom on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

The print, which is signed and bears the stamp for the limited edition print specialists Henry Donn Studio, is one of just 850 in the world and was valued before the auction at just £250.

Allan Darwell, picture valuer at Halls, said: "I have had this same print a few times over the years and have managed to get maybe £200 to £400 on a good day – but never anywhere near £1,250.

"It shows that Lowry art is on the up. But I must admit I was still quite surprised.

"I think the price it has sold for is testament to Lowry really."

Elsewhere a set of nine medals awarded to a highly decorated British soldier who served in India and Afghanistan sold for £5,000.

The medals, which belonged to Captain Philip James Griffiths Pipon, included the most distinguished order of St Michael and St George companions and the most eminent order of the India Empire companions. The buyer was an internet bidder from Australia.
