Church Stretton's library should stay exactly where it is, according to the results of a public ballot.

People in the town were asked for their views on the future of their library, which is under threat because of Shropshire Council budget cuts.

Although Church Stretton School, now known as South Shropshire Academy, has come forward and offered to house the town's library at its site on Shrewsbury Road, a survey carried out by Church Stretton Library Support Group showed that people want it to stay at its current address in the town centre.

Everybody who took part in the ballot voted to keep the library in the town centre.

Felicity Thomas, for the support group, said: "We were not at all surprised by the overwhelming level of support though we were surprised that many did not even know this had been proposed.

"The proposal to move the library is so deeply flawed it should be withdrawn with immediate effect. The final result shows that where Church Stretton library is concerned, Shropshire Council is missing quite a few screws."
