Eurofighter theory after 'sonic boom' over Shropshire

Thousands of people in Shropshire were rudely awoken by a "sonic boom". The cause of the noise was today at the centre of a furious online debate – with many speculating it may have been caused by a Eurofighter plane.

The booming sound was heard at around 4.45am on Sunday.

Fighter jets operate in the county from airbases in the region and the mysterious explosion heard yesterday follows an identical episode in 2008, which was also blamed on a Eurofighter breaking the sound barrier.

Ministry of Defence spokesman today said it was "highly unlikely" that one of its planes had caused a sonic boom.

A spokesman for RAF Shawbury said it had no aircraft capable of breaking the sound barrier, although there were other airbases in the region.
