About 300 birds went on display at the annual Ellesmere and District Cage Bird Society Show.

The event, which featured domestic, foreign and exotic birds and is one of the biggest in the area, took place in Ellesmere Town Hall.

Enthusiasts from across Shropshire, Mid Wales and as far as Rhyl and the Wirral, entered a wide variety of birds such as canaries, budgies and parrots to win titles in a range of classes.

Six trophies were handed out to the winners by national bird artist Eric Peake.

Marian Ralph, member of the society, said she was delighted with the turnout and hailed Saturday's event a success.

She said: "The event was brilliant. We had 239 birds last year and this year we had 302.

"We also had one or two new people which is always nice to see.

"We had quite a few members of the public who had a look around. There are always refreshments such as tea and coffee on offer.

"Only two people from Ellesmere, including ourselves, display birds. But we have people from all over."

Mrs Ralph added: "The society has been going about 100 years. The event was disbanded just after the War but started again in 1967.

"We have currently got seven birds and they are all foreign. They include parrots and love birds. We try and show most of them at the event."

Ellesmere and District Cage Bird Society meets on the last Monday of the month at 8pm in Ellesmere Comrades Club.
