Shropshire Star

Call that a pumpkin? THIS is a pumpkin!

It weighs in at a mighty 35 stone and sits proud at more than three feet wide. And for Barry Truss this pumpkin is his pride and joy.

Barry is the envy of all his mates at his local, the Severn Stars in Beckbury.

The 60-year-old planted his pumpkin in April and it then grew and grew and grew.

In fact it grew so big that it was too big for the scales at the pub, which was hosting the competition. Instead Barry, of Ryton Road, Beckbury, near Shifnal, used a small digger to carry the pumpkin to a nearby farm to use its weighbridge.

It recorded a weight of 486 pounds, twice Barry's weight and comfortably beating the 14 other entries including his wife Carol's 220 pounder – which came second.

Mr Truss said it was the heaviest the annual village competition had ever seen and put everyone in an ultra-competitive mood for next year's contest.

The HGV driver said: "We could not believe it when we took it to the farm and put it on the weighbridge. We just could not believe it.

"We have a children's competition as well and we did that one first and then we did guess the weight of it and raised more than £100 for Compton Hospice in Wolverhampton.

"We had to get a little digger to pick it up take it to the weighbridge and got a ticket to prove the weight.

"We took it back to the pub hid it an envelope.

"Everyone was amazed and now everyone is having a go next year to try and beat it."

The large winning pumpkin will now be carved up by children in the village for Halloween.
