Mr Pritchard made a formal complaint to the new Independent Press Standards Organisation after a reporter from the paper contacted him posing as woman interested in a relationship.

He is one of a group of Conservative MPs who claim they were victims of a form of attempted entrapment.

Another MP, Brooks Newmark, resigned before the publication of a story that revealed he had exchanged explicit images with the undercover reporter, who was purporting to be an attractive "twentysomething Tory PR girl".

Mr Pritchard had also threatened to go to the Metropolitan Police and said his case would be a test for the new press regulator.

He was not available for comment, but tweeted:
