The two men jumped from a passing car and ran to the aid of a policeman who was attempting to pull the man to safety.

The drama happened last night at the English Bridge.

Police were alerted by members of the public who called 999 after they saw the man climb over railings at the bridge.

Officers, aided by the two members of the public, managed to grab him before he could jump into the River Severn.

Natasha Fox, 26, of Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury, was passing the bridge when she saw the drama unfold.

Ms Fox, who works at Waitrose in the town, said: "There was a police car and an officer on the bridge trying to deal with the situation.

"Then a car pulled up and stopped. Two guys jumped out and shouted to the police officer asking if he he need help.

"He obviously said yes because they both went running over and dragged this guy back over the wall. He looked like a big fellow. It happened so quickly, but thankfully the men in the car and the policeman acted fast and saved the man from falling."

Inspector Ben Smith, of West Mercia Police, said: "We had a call to say he was on the water side of the railing on the bridge.

"We attended and managed to grab hold of him and pull him to safety.

"He does appear to be poorly and received treatment from an ambulance crew. Everybody involved is safe and well."

The rescue happened at about 8.30pm last night.

It is the latest incident involving people attempting to jump into the river in Shrewsbury.

In the past month four people have had to be rescued by emergency services.
