Visitors to Chirk Castle are now able to step aboard the two-wheeled Segways for a tour of the estate.

Already people of all ages, including those who would struggle to walk the two-and-a-half mile circular route around the castle, have enjoyed the new attraction, which is a self-balancing, battery-powered electric vehicle.

SegTrek has been set up by Liam Baldi and Tom Cart, who saw the potential of people being able to explore the National Trust-managed ground in a fun way.

And they hope families with older children will take up the Segway trail challenge when they visit the castle at half term. They are also organising a Halloween trek for the end of the month. To use a Segway people have to weigh more than 6st 7lb so that they can operate it safely.

Mr Baldi said: "The autumn colours are on full show at Chirk Castle. Segways are a great way to get around the grounds and can deal with both ascents and descents.

"We have had visitors in their 80s and people with mobility problems who love the fact that they can get around the parkland and woods."

During the tours parties are given an insight into the flora and fauna of the grounds as well as hearing some of the legends of the castle and stories like the demise of the some of the grazing pigs who roamed the area who ate some poison mushrooms.

The SegTrek attraction and Chirk Castle have been nominated for Best Visitor Attraction in Wrexham Tourism Awards. The awards ceremony will be held tomorrow.
