Council is urged to act over Telford 'danger' lights

Residents today called for urgent action at "dangerous" traffic lights in Telford or "risk somebody being killed".

Gordon Tranter, 43, and members of Lawley Parish Council say they have now recorded 20 road accidents at the Newdale crossroads in Lawley, Telford.

They are urging Telford & Wrekin Council to remove the new traffic system there, which they claim has too many sets of traffic lights, and replace it with a roundabout.

It comes after a woman was cut free from her car by firefighters following a two-car crash at the spot on Friday.

Mr Tranter, of Lawley Village, urged the council to act before somebody is seriously hurt or killed.

He said: "When you come down the road past the Grazing Cow Pub you have set after set of lights.

"There are 10 sets of traffic lights overall with a nine-way sequence and it is really dangerous. What happens is because there are so many lights it is not really clear which ones you should be looking at as a driver, so people are driving out on red and getting into crashes.

"There is also a railing there and it is not clear which side you are meant to drive on. So many people have crashed into that railing and it's never been repaired.

"I've almost done it myself. "

The former roundabout at the site was replaced as part of the development works in Lawley.

But Mr Tranter believes the situation will get worse when a new primary school is built nearby in 2016.

"When the school is there the traffic will be worse and I dread to think how many more accidents will happen then.

"Not to mention the number of children in the area. What will happen is nothing will be done until somebody has died – and that's too late.

"Lawley Parish Council is trying to get something done as well because of the danger.

"We've counted 20 crashes at the spot so far this year."
