Failing Shrewsbury primary school put in special measures

A Shrewsbury school has been placed in special measures after Ofsted inspectors found serious failings.

Inspectors visited Shrewsbury Cathedral Catholic Primary School, in New Park Road, Castlefields, in July.

They found that the governance of the school was inadequate, standards were not high enough in key stage two, pupils were making insufficient progress and standards at the end of key stage one were slowly declining.

Inspectors also found that teaching did not challenge the more able pupils and teaching assistants did not help pupils enough, which meant that pupils were not able to fully participate in lessons.

They recommended that the school, which has 148 pupils aged four to 11, should not appoint newly qualified teachers. The report added: "They are over-optimistic that giving children an enjoyable eduction will, alone, raise standards.

"Although the headteacher checks the quality of teaching, her monitoring is not accurate or robust. Plans and policies for reading, writing and mathematics are weak."

Staff and governors at the school are now working with Shropshire Council and the Diocese of Shrewsbury Education Service to address the outcomes of the report. Governors say they have taken immediate action and are working with education advisers.
