Shoppers and residents were able to see the plans from 3pm to 7pm today during a public consultation event at Oswestry Memorial Hall.

During the drop-in consultation, plans for the development will be on display and representatives from Lidl will be answering questions.

Nicole Benford, spokeswoman for Lidl UK, said: "I can confirm that the new store will be located on the old JT Hughes Garage site on Victoria Street in Oswestry.

"A public consultation meeting is to be held today between 3pm and 7pm at Oswestry Memorial Hall, Smithfield Street. We've sent out 4,500 invites to local residents to attend this event as well as members of the chamber of commerce and town councillors."

The site will also be used to create a new retail complex alongside three non-food shops.

National pet store chain Pets at Home is rumoured to be interested in another one of the new shops.

It is currently unknown how many jobs will be created by the new shops.

John Hughes, managing director of JT Hughes, said his business will be moving to a new dealership on another site to free up the space for the new development.

He said: "We will be relocating to a new purpose-built premises in Oswestry, that is the plan. We have always been trying to develop our site and this will allow us to develop a purpose-built car dealership, so it is a good opportunity for us and a good opportunity for three other businesses and Lidl to come to the town."

The announcement came just three weeks after Lidl revealed plans to open a new store in Mill Lane, Welshpool, creating up to 40 new jobs.

A consultation event in Welshpool showed broad support for the plans, although some residents were concerned that its location on the edge of town near to Tesco would lead to shoppers abandoning the town centre.
