Traffic ground to a halt around the Preston Boats roundabout in Shrewsbury, which is currently having an £8.4 million revamp.

The lorry hit a bridge before the roundabout, which caused it to drop the contents of its trailer.

The HGV pulled over to the roadside at the roundabout but motorists travelling from the edge Shrewsbury onto the A5 towards Telford were held up while the carriageway was cleared and cars diverted around the problem.

Kieran Bodill, speaking for West Mercia Police said: "There was a collision with a lorry and its load had fallen off, blocking the carriageway.

"It was coming from the direction of Sundorne Island and the load came off at the end of the trailer.

"The road was closed off while the incident was dealt with."

The accident happened at around 2.30pm on Friday and lanes were opened again at about 4.25pm.

There will more road closures coming up at the Preston Boats and Emstry Island roundabouts due to work on the carriageway.

The eastbound carriageway will be closed from September 4 to 30 between 7:30pm and 7am. A diversion route will be clearly signposted.
