The 20-year-old woman called the fire service after smoke detectors were set off at about 3am when cooking which had been left unattended in the kitchen caught fire.

It spread to other units and appliances and she was forced to escape from her first floor window.

The fire was out on the arrival of fire crews, but caused considerable smoke damage to the other rooms in the house.

Chris White, who was present at the incident, said: "Although the working smoke detectors have prevented a much more serious outcome, smoke from the fire was able to travel from the fire throughout the property due to all of the internal doors being left open.

"Not only has the presence of smoke throughout the property prevented the occupant from making a safe escape through the front door, it has also caused significant smoke damage to every other room in the property."
