Martin moved up two places in the rankings since he last took part four years ago.

The caller represented his home town of Shrewsbury as he bellowed out his best cries across Chester against 24 competitors from 10 nations.

"I also came second for the world town crier ambassador award which is for walking around and talking to people and engaging with the locals," said Mr Wood after the Town Crier World Tournament.

"I am very pleased. It was lovely to be there and to meet up with the town criers who we haven't seen for a long time."

Many travelled to support Mr Wood and wife Sue, who acts at his escort, including mayor Councillor Beverley Baker.

"There were loads of people from Shrewsbury who came up over the three daysto say hello," said Mr Wood.
