Sergeant Lee Johnson said the man heard beeping as he walked past Barclays Bank in Cross Street, Oswestry.

He said the man noticed a large amount of cash totalling "hundreds of pounds" was hanging out of the bank's ATM so he took it and handed it in to police.

Sergeant Johnson said: "We were absolutely thrilled that there was someone out there who came across this large amount of cash and decided that rather than having a happy Bank Holiday at someone else's unfortunate expense, they should hand it in.

"He did absolutely the right thing and we will now be in touch with Barclays to return it and they will no doubt contact the person who left it behind."

Sergeant Johnson said: "It is an amount in the hundreds and we want to highlight that Shropshire has a lot of good eggs. It restores your faith in people."

Anyone who thinks the money is theirs should contact Barclays or West Mercia Police on 101.
