Both Mike Coppock and Nicky Maddox, both from Llansilin, near Oswestry, are frightened of heights but decided to brave a 500ft high zipwire ride to raise funds for the lifesaving service.

They were overwhelmed by the support they received from friends, family and well wishers, and were delighted to have raised £1,955 from their adventure.

Mike, who owns and runs Rowanthorne gift shop in Oswestry, decided to raise money for Wales Air Ambulance after one of its charity boxes was stolen from his shop.

He said: "I was so upset that someone would take a charity box from my shop, that I decided to make up for the loss of money and take on a challenge to raise funds. I am terrified of heights so I thought that taking on the highest zipwire in Europe might just inspire a few people to give a donation.

"I persuaded my friend Nicky, who is also scared of heights, to join me."

The pair braved the world's longest and fastest zipwire, which is located in Bethesda, North Wales. At 500ft high, the zipwire is also said to be the highest in Europe.

"We are both so delighted with the support we received, and want to thank everyone who donated. We have visited the airbase and met the crew, and feel so pleased and proud to have raised funds for such a worthy cause," Mike said.

The pair recently visited the charity's Mid Wales air ambulance helicopter, based at Mid Wales Airport in Welshpool to meet the aircrew.

Karen Davies, Wales Air Ambulance paramedic, said: "It was lovely to meet Mike and Nicky when they visited us at Welshpool. It never ceases to amaze and humble us how far people will go to raise funds for this service. We are very grateful for their support."
