Protesters' fury at Shrewsbury homes consultation process

Opponents of a planned 750-home development in Shrewsbury have criticised a consultation process as they were left with one more week to voice their concerns.

People living close to a site at Bicton Heath have been fighting plans, submitted by David Wilson Homes, for more than a year.

Plans for 750 homes, up to 29 acres of employment land, a new Oxon Link Road between the A5 Bypass and the Holyhead Road, and an expanded local centre were first unveiled in July 2013 as part of the Shrewsbury West Sustainable Urban Extension plan.

Objections

But, following objections, David Wilson Homes and Birmingham-based planning consultants RPS, resubmitted amended plans to Shropshire Council.

Last week, a two-week re-consultation period began and large illustrative boards of the proposed development of the site were placed at the Co-op store.

Kathy Else, planning consultant at RPS, said: "We agreed with Shropshire Council to submit amended plans for the site."

Jan Bevan, speaking on behalf of Shrewsbury West Residents Association, said: "There is continuing woefully inadequate consultation."

Alan Mosley, Shropshire and Shrewsbury Town Councillor for Castlefields and Ditherington, added: "In my view it is entirely unsatisfactory that the consultation was so badly conducted as to be invalid and I will be asking Helen Ball, town clerk for Shrewsbury Town Council, to ensure that the views of the Shrewsbury West Residents' Association are made known to the planning committee."
