The 65-year-old man was cycling towards traffic along Raven Meadows, near to Shrewsbury Bus Station, at 3.45pm yesterday when the driver of a silver Peugeot convertible, a woman in her 70s, pulled out in front of him.

He was catapulted over the bonnet of the car, denting the bodywork and shattering the windscreen, but was able to get back on to his feet.

Police and an ambulance were called.

A bystander said: "It looked pretty nasty. The driver was attempting to turn out of the loading area below the shopping centres and the cyclist was travelling towards traffic.

"I don't think she saw him and he carried on cycling towards the car and was catapulted across the windscreen.

"He was left lying in the road but got up quickly and was very shaken. The car driver said she had looked both ways and the cyclist said it was his fault. He was very lucky to get away without serious injury."
