Roadworks set to close major Shrewsbury route

One of the main routes into Shrewsbury town centre was closing today as part an overhaul of the town's transport system.

Wyle Cop will remain closed to vehicles for at least two weeks as part of a council plan to make the route safer for pedestrians.

The scheme is already a week behind schedule due to ongoing problems with drainage.

Nearby Beeches Lane is also currently closed as part of the work, despite it being scheduled to reopen to traffic several days ago.

The work may not be finished until mid-July.

Shropshire Council apologised to commuters last week after failing to inform them that the Wyle Cop work had been delayed.

Claire Wild, cabinet member for highways and transport, described the proposed closure dates as "flexible" and she said that the delays were inevitable due to the nature of the work.

The town centre will still be accessible and a number of traffic diversions are in place.
