Officers are appealing for witnesses following a fatal accident in the early hours of Friday, June 6.

The accident happened on the A5 near Shrewsbury, where a red Vauxhall Corsa crashed into a traffic island at the junction with the B4380 and London Road at around 2.15am.

Police are particularly keen to speak to the driver of the lorry who may have seen the red Vauxhall Corsa travelling on the wrong side of the dual carriageway and being followed by a police vehicle.

Officers believe that the driver of the lorry may have been travelling through Shrewsbury on the A5 from Oswestry and heading either onto the M54 towards the West Midlands or on the A49 towards Cheshire.

Inspector Julian Smith, the investigating officer, said today: "A full investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal accident and it is vital that we speak to the driver of the lorry who may have witnessed the vehicles travelling along the A5."

Anyone with information should call West Mercia Police on 101, quoting incident number 0066S 060614.

One man died and another was seriously injured in the crash, which forced the closure of the A5.

The dead man was named by police as Stefen Boswell, 20, from Wolverhampton.

The car was being followed by police after a burglary in Craven Arms.

Mr Boswell is believed to have been at the wheel of the Vauxhall Corsa that smashed into Emstrey Island near Shrewsbury, at the junction of the B4380 and the London Road, at about 2.15am.

He managed to escape the wreckage of the car but suffered a heart attack at the side of the road and died despite a battle by paramedics to save him.

A passenger in the car, a 19-year-old man, was trapped in the wreckage for about 40 minutes and was given emergency treatment by medics as firefighters battled to free him.

The man was subsequently taken to University Hospital North Staffordshire suffering from head, facial and suspected spinal injuries.
